Zinc is an essential mineral for dogs, playing a critical role in their overall health. It is involved in numerous biological processes, including immune function, skin health, and enzyme activity. Here's why zinc supplementation might be important for dogs:

1. Skin and Coat Health
Zinc supports healthy skin and helps maintain a shiny coat. A deficiency in zinc can lead to skin issues such as flaking, redness, or hair loss, especially around the face, paws, and groin. It may also help manage conditions like zinc-responsive dermatosis.

2. Immune System Support
Zinc is crucial for a robust immune response. It helps the body fight infections and supports wound healing by aiding in tissue repair.

3. Growth and Development
For growing puppies, zinc is vital for proper skeletal development and overall growth. Pregnant or lactating dogs may also need additional zinc to support their puppies.

4. Digestion and Metabolism
Zinc is necessary for the production of digestive enzymes and supports proper nutrient absorption.

5. Breeds with Higher Requirements
Certain breeds, such as Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and some large-breed dogs, are more prone to zinc deficiencies due to their unique metabolic needs or difficulties absorbing zinc from their diet.

When to Supplement
While a high-quality, balanced dog food typically provides adequate zinc, supplementation may be necessary if:
- The dog has a diagnosed deficiency.
- The dog is on a home-prepared diet.
- The breed is predisposed to zinc-related issues.
- The dog shows symptoms such as poor coat condition, skin lesions, or slow wound healing.

Consult Your Veterinarian
It's essential to consult a veterinarian before adding zinc supplements to your dog's diet. Over-supplementation can lead to zinc toxicity, which can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or even more severe health issues. Your vet can determine the appropriate dosage and monitor your dog's response.

Dosage:

Maintenance dose 1 scoop per 10kg.
Can give up to 4x the maintenance dose for chronic conditions.
